Volunteering

To be a volunteer in such and harness such a great opportunity, there is a short online application one must fill out. The selection process for high school students is rigorous due to the increasing need for community service to graduate. High school students who wish to apply must fill out an application which is available online, and then, from there, wait to be contacted for acceptance. For those who are beyond high school, they must fill out an online application as well and then and also wait to be contact. The difference between the high school volunteer and post-high school volunteer's acceptance process is that the post-high school volunteer is selected on a first come first serve basis, while the high school volunteer is accepted on a more selective basis.
All applications submitted beyond the deadline will be rolled over to the volunteer list for the following year.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship comes in two different forms. The first most immediate form is donation, where a person, organization, or business donates an amount of money to the Youth Day project. In this there is a short online form to fill out that will allow us to make one's donation tax deductible as well as anonymous if one chooses in addition to receiving a receipt for one's donation. If one does not have the financial means to donate their desired amount, it is recommended to give what ever one can. And if one feels that that is not enough, then there is always the second option for sponsoring; fundraising. In fundraising there is also an online form to fill out of that allows the Youth Day Committee to certify fundraisers as Youth Day approved and supported. Once the form is filled out, the fundraiser will be contacted for approval. Both forms of sponsorship result in making an incredible difference in you community a dollar at a time, or even more so if one pleases.
Please contact the Youth Day Project for all donations.

Support

Youth Day is a community project, because of this, the Youth Day Committee is always looking for sponsors and volunteers. The committee does its best to include as many members of the local community as possible. Every Youth Day project is customized to the specification of the location's dynamics.
No youth event on this scale is ran entirely for free, money is always needed. But remember it does not have to always be what others expect one to give but more so what they are able. Every dollar counts, and certainly every dollar makes a difference. If one owns a business or knows a business owner, one can create or suggest a donation box to create a center in which people can make a difference.
In the event that one can not give money, time can always be just as valuable. The need for staff to manage the project is just as important, however it is limited. Youth Day takes 20 to 50 volunteers on minimum average, but every location has its limits. In volunteering one harnesses a great opportunity, so take it while it lasts.
We cannot wait for you to join us in our endeavors to give youth the recognition and respect they deserve. The next generation is surely in the hand of them and if you invest in our youth then you invest in our future. And with Youth Day, age does not limit the amount in which you can give back to your own community.

Andre Davis: Committee Member

Andre Davis is a native of New Haven Connecticut and resident of new York City. Andre has studied the art of poetry, acting, and dance while under the tutelage and expertise of skilled, legendary poets, actors and dancers. At the age of three Andre discovered his love of the arts. Andre soon began to perform in his house under the captivated eyes of relatives and friends. Andre perfected his craft in acting by first mimicking well known and prominent performers in music and film. Andre possesses the unique quality to be versatile and through the arts, has demonstrated a true love and passion for creative expression. Whether it's through painting, dancing, acting or poetic expression, Andre has learned the valuable lesson to never limit himself and to be all that he can be.

Through out the years Andre has established himself as a successful entrepreneur and has utilized his gift of the arts by designing, painting and airbrushing clothing. Shortly after that he would commit himself to fashion shows that would expose his work. In this way Andre transformed numerous ordinary clothing into beautiful masterpieces. In the mid 1980's he received a video camera from a friend that would soon peak his interest and enhance his passion for film. By the late 1980's Andre participated in workshops at
CTV for film, lighting, and editing. Andre, along with close friend Terrell Deluz then launched their first independent film titled "A Nightmare on Our Elm City Streets". Andre and friends were also actors in this debut film. In 1991 Andre acted in a music video called "To Little Time" in Brooklyn New York produced by Troy Tailor.

In 1995 Andre acted in a special for HBO called "Drive By", a film directed by Jamal Joseph in New York City. Andre soon gained more expertise in the art of acting and directing by sitting on the sets of several films that were produced by Jamal Joseph as well as other producers that shot films around his residential area in Harlem.

Andre's strong passion for the arts through out his life has escalated from dancing for loved ones in his home, to the streets, to New York City underground dance clubs and  finally to the stage where he began to choreograph and perform for various artist. Andre  would often act in music videos and was asked by Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of the group TLC to choreograph dance, and auditioned for her just before she passed. Inspired by the legendary "last poets" Andre would often find himself in poetry clubs throughout various states, particularly New York and Connecticut. Andre launched his first Nationwide PSA on black history for the Community Healing network in 2008. Through spoken word Andre is continuously and creatively touching the lives of men, women, children, fathers, families and communities.

Firm Apparel

2006 marked the official establishment of Firm Apparel’s mission. Mission statement: “To equip mankind with apparel that promotes self-confidence & human empowerment”.  Firm Apparel’s purpose coincides with the purpose of life; which is to strictly obey the One that created us all and not his creation. We encourage mankind to “take a stand & be FIRM” by following what our Creator has revealed; which guarantees you will be mentally, psychologically and spiritually protected from the evils of society.
Firm Apparel is one aspect of the FIRM Movement. The word “firm” has many meanings. Just to describe a few: by our definition, (1) we aim to hold on strong to our beliefs for the greater good (2) we are an establishment carrying out business (3) F.I.R.M. (Focus. Inspire. Remind. Motivate.). Back in 2006 our intention was to build a grassroots foundation. Five years later, in 2011 we have made significant   intangible progress; which is immeasurable and priceless. Using all GOD’s gifts and resources to mankind we are working hard to build the Firm Enterprise though positive entertainment, applicable education and youth empowerment. Malcolm X said “the future belongs to those who prepare for it today”. We want the whole world to be Firmed Up for generations to come. Firm Forever! firmaparrel.com

Sakinah Thomas: Liaison of Port Arthur, Texas

"SoLive" was born Sakinah Thomas on February 24, 1990 in Port Arthur, Texas but was mainly raised in Dallas. She's the youngest of 12 children. Out of that bunch she was lucky enough to get the weird gene. ! ^___^ ! She's known for being a free-spirited person, loves people and animal .... and most of all Love it self. She's pretty outspoken when she needs to be but is actually quite shy.
Also, Sakinah likes to think of herself as a hippie, probably because Its just the way she feels deep down inside. Her daily life mostly includes back to back event of randomness.

She's an aspiring photographer who enjoys taking photos of just about anything. Mainly photos that expresses how she feels at that moment or just all around. Photography for her is a way to speak to people without saying anything. In the near future, she would like for her photography to grow and help others be inspired to follow there heart and do what they Love, no matter who tells you that you cant succeed.

Youth is important to her because, as pre-teenager she always felt as though there was no one she could talk to. So at a young age, she felt like it was important for her to contribute to helping children, teens, and young adult cope with any hard times or good times that comes across them in there life time.

Nollysha Canteen: Assistant Director

Hidden jewel with an early start to community outreach and development in New Haven, Connecticut, Nollysha Canteen maintains an honors GPA while volunteering and standing as a role model for others in her community. She has spent her high school years mainly as a member of her school's JROTC. In being apart of this program she has been able both learn, demonstrate, teach discipline while carrying out many different responsibilities to participate in various other community programs such the Agency for the Aging and the Red Cross Blood Drive.
But this is not the only thing that she has been involved in, Nollysha has also been a member of the Girl Scouts since September of 2009. In her most recent endeavors: she has made changes in the New Haven Public School system by talking to principals government officials as a student leader of Youth UnleashED, she has incorporated her poetic talents into youth activism as a member of The Youth Revolution, and she has assisted in political campaigns in efforts to better different neighborhoods in New Haven, Connecticut and eventually the world as a member of the
Young Communist League;  surprisingly, even this is not enough for her.
In efforts to make an even bigger change, Nollysha harnesses her poetic talents and work experience as a teaching assistant in the Day Dream Theatre of the Arts becoming a Board of Director of The Youth Revolution and a member the Youth Day Committee.

Her academic excellence and poetic talents in addition to desires to better her community never ceases to amaze the world. She prospers, and will always do so making every step of she takes a milestone for a greater good.

Youth Day Committee

Youth Day was founded by the president of TYR, however it is not a TYR event. Youth Day is a youth and community based project that is specified to its specific location. In order to create such a project of this nature, a committee is constructed with members of local community. Also because Youth Day is a youth based project, at least 50% of the committee is always youth around and under the age of 18. Some may say that we set these guidelines just to fill seats in our committee and expand quicker, but truthfully, we believe that Youth organizations, events, projects, etc. are more effective when you have a high amount of youth input.
Below you can get to know each of our committee members and their accomplishments in their fields of interest.

The Youth Revolution

The mission of The Youth Revolution is to educate our youth through the arts, breed youth that stand as role models in the arts industry, and give a more positive prospective on the most popular forms of modern music.
TYR, The Youth Revolution, formally known as SAD, Students Against Drugs, began from a union of Amistad Academy Middle School students, Sabir Abdussabur, Dorothy Follens, Willis Marina, and Alezxander Moore. Alezxander Moore, founder of SAD, organized and brought the union between the students which turn into us performing in front of the Amistad Academy Middle School on the date of January 9th, 2009; which is marked as the anniversary of TYR. For this first of many performances, a skit was performed on not smoking and drinking while singing the “Drug Free” by Native Deen. Being a big hit our first go around, we organized, mobilized, then began to set times for other performances. And in attempt to expand the mission of SAD we became The Youth Revolution.

Sabir Abdussabur

Sabir “4ReAl” Abdussabur is a Hip Hop, R&B, Music Artist and Producer out of New Haven, Connecticut. Sabir strives to be a positive role model by encouraging youth interested in getting into the music industry to have an education because so that they have choices when it is time for them to do something else. Maintaining an Honors GPA, he is the President and   a founder of a youth TYR, which teaches youth to use the performing arts to produce positive messages and changes and the founder of Youth Day, which takes place on the second Saturday of the year in New Haven, Connecticut celebrating the talents of our youth. “I keep it ReAl and never sugarcoat the truth; someone’s gotta do it!”
